The PBL Announces Newest Expansion Team the Providence Sky Chiefs

The Premier Basketball League (PBL) today announced its latest expansion team, the Providence Sky Chiefs, for the upcoming 2016 season.

The Providence Sky Chiefs, Rhode Island’s first professional basketball team in nearly three decades, completed a successful campaign competing in its inaugural season in 2014-15. The RI based team won several titles, including a regional championship and the 2015 BENRUS Pro Basketball Championship.

“We are overjoyed to be able to bring a fine organization like the Providence Sky Chiefs into the PBL,” said PBL Commissioner Dennis Truax. “Having Providence in the PBL helps the league across many platforms and continues to show our fans, advertisers, and sponsors how serious we are with the teams we allow into the PBL.  The Sky Chiefs is a first class organization and will provide world-class competition to the existing PBL teams. “

“We are excited to join the PBL, an established organization comprised of quality teams from top to bottom throughout the league. The PBL has strong, professional leadership at the helm, a solid structure in place and holds its teams to very high standards. This is a great league for extremely talented, highly motivated young men to showcase their talent and pursue their dreams of playing basketball at a professional level!” said Sky Chiefs President and General Manager Antonio Lopes.

“As we embark on the 2016 season we are looking forward to building upon the success we had during our inaugural season, continue to build our fan base through being a great community partner and take the organization to an even higher level.”

Established in 2008, the PBL enters the 2016 season with 18 teams in three divisions, the most in league history. The Providence Sky Chiefs join the Kentucky Mavericks (formerly the Shreveport Mavericks) as the newest additions to the PBL.

The league, which will kick off its ninth season in January 2016, recently announced a new partnership with ESPN3 for the upcoming season. More than 30 PBL games will be broadcast live on the channel.

Former Diesel Derek Elston Named Indiana

University Basketball's Director of Player

Derek Elston is a former Indiana University forward who spent his college career playing for the dominant Big 10 powerhouse and played with stars such as Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo.

Elston was always a team and coach favorite during his campaign with IU. Elston’s fire was sparked in part by a brief stint in semi-pro basketball with the Indianapolis Diesels, a team in the Midwest-based Premier Basketball League that plays its home games at Broad Ripple High School. He joined that squad toward the end of its season in May when one of their big men went down and opened up a spot.

“It was a big confidence booster for me,” Elston said. “And at the same time, I got to play with some guys who had also played in Russia and Germany and other places overseas and got an idea what that was all about.”

The Diesels and the PBL will be looking on and hoping Derek the highest of success in his new role with the Indiana University Basketball Team.
